    About the Book:

The Evolution and impact: a history of the Institute of Information Scientists 1958-2002 is the first history of the Institute of Information Scientists, which was founded in 1958 and merged with the Library Association in 2002 to form the Chartered Institute of LIbrary and Information Professionals. The history has been written by Sandra and Martin with the support of Charles Oppenheim, all of them members of the IIS since the mid-1970s and each having served as President of the Institute.  In the absence of a formal archive the history is based on secondary sources and the memories of former members.

    About the Authors:
Martin is a chemist by training but an information scientist by profession. He started using computer-based retrieval services in 1976. Martin set up Intranet Focus Ltd in 1999 and has gained an international reputation over the last twenty years for his understanding of how to manage enterprise and intranet search applications.  Martin has been a Visiting Professor at the Information School since 2002 He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the British Computer Society.

Sandra's Degree and PhD studies in Chemistry were the foundation for a career managing information in Pharma R&D.  Initially focused on chemical structure computerization at Wellcome Research; at Glaxo/Glaxo Wellcome,  Sandra extended  her reach to data and text retrieval, document management, records management, corporate archives, and KM.   Subsequent consultancy was focused on her passion to ensure organisations secure the maximum benefit from their own and external knowledge and information.  She played a major role in the recent updating of the Hawley report by KPMG and CILIP to encourage a new generation of senior executives and leaders to engage with the strategic value of their information assets.
